AI and a Better Way Forward

Hello everyone, and welcome back to this weeks SMC Substack Live. Now on this weeks iteration, we are going to jump into a world that many in our community are familiar with but also many in the public are unaware of– the legislative benefits and costs of protecting kids online.

Now, in this day and age, there is one thing all activists agree upon related to kids online safety– that is, that no silver bullet exists. Some pay more attention to phones in schools, while others like SMC work to build new platforms with Gen Z. Now, our main conversationalist today comes from a completely different and equally meaningful entry point. Isabel Sunderland cares about policy oriented solutions. Isabel is a technology reform policy associate at Issue One, a bipartisan nonprofit working to strengthen democracy and hold Big Tech accountable. She focuses on online safety, platform design, Section 230, data privacy, and national security, advancing policy across Capitol Hill, the White House, state governments, and international institutions. Isabel also leads state and federal advocacy for Design It For Us, a youth-led movement pushing for safer social media. Previously, she was a digital content associate for the Real Facebook Oversight Board. She holds a B.A. in International Relations and Justice and Law from American University. Isabel is a thought leader in the space, so we cannot wait to hear what she has to say about today’s topics.

Next, we invite back Sarah Martin– SMC Summer Fellow and Columbia MBA candidate. Thank you for joining us again Sarah, your insights always meaningfully contribute to the conversation.
